Russia - Ukraine Conflict Background
In 2014 Ukraine faced the great threat to its national security since the collapse of the Soviet Union , of which it had been part for most of the 20th century.
The Russia-Ukraine conflict is an ongoing Geopolitical and International issue and military standoff between Russia and Ukraine that began in February 2014 as part of an offshoot of the Revolution of Dignity or the 2014 Ukrainian Revolution and the removal of Russian-leaning Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych on 22 February 2014.
However, the issue centers specifically on the status of Crimea, a strategically important peninsula along the northern coast of the Black Sea in Eastern Europe, and Donbas, a region in south-eastern Ukraine. Both territories are internationally recognized as part of Ukraine. Russian fleets were allowed to maintain their presence in Crimea but it annexed the Peninsula in 2014.

- Russia, considering the economic significance of Ukraine, sought Ukraine membership in the Eurasian Economic Community (EAEC).

- Russia claims that the eastward expansion by the NORTH ATLANTIC TREATY ORGANIZATION(NATO) which they call "Enlargement" has threatened Russia interest .
Russia - Ukraine crisis has escalated, creating fears of a major war. Here are the some top developments on the conflict:
- Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday recognized Donetsk and Luhansk , Two separatist regions in eastern Ukraine, As independent and ordered the deployment of troops there for "peacekeeping".
- The United Nations Security council convened an emergency session, during which the United States and its allies criticized Russia's moves.
- US Ambassador Linda Thomas- Greenfield hit out at Vladimir Putin for claiming that the troops would have a peacekeeping role.
- US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Russia had clearly attacked Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
- A special Air India Flight has left for Ukraine to bring Indian nationals home, news agency ANI reported.
Stock markets around the world crashed amid the escalation of tensions. In India, Sensex fell 1,000 points, while Nifty was trading below 17,000.
- An invasion by Russia would put pressure on India to choose between the western alliance and Russia.
- Maintaining strong relations with Russia serve India's national interests. India cannot join any western strategy aimed at isolating Russia.
- There is a possibility of Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA) sanctions on India by the U.S. as a result of the S-400
